Wear For Where: Orange County

California is a place that has become a second home. I have relatives all along the coast, a brother who attends USC, and 3 consecutive months of exploring last summer, all promoting me from the title of “tourist” to “honorary local” (in my opinion 😉 )!! During my 3 month exploration I divided my time between Los Angeles, where I interned, and Orange County, where one of my aunts lives. This area of southern California is composed of many beach and near-the-beach towns that span along PCH. My aunt lives in Huntington Beach, where a change of OC scenery is no more than a short drive South. So, from my many days spent on the ‘Golden West Coast’, I have created a list of must-see destinations and the outfits you should wear while you’re there!

Enjoy! Xo

Huntington Beach

As previously mentioned, my mom’s oldest sister calls Huntington Beach home. Lucky for me, she recently made the move from Kansas to a  house just a mile from the HB beach (making me just a 3 hour flight away from all the same beach house privileges)!

Huntington Beach is one of the more laid back of the OC towns, it is a surf town with a sprawling beach, a pier, and plenty to do between the new Pacific City Mall and the historic Main Street.

When I stay, I love to pack my days full: I wake up and run along the beach, grab coffee at Philz’ (their Mint Mojito is to die!!), lay on the beach, and walk around the outdoor shopping center.. also filled with amazing restaurants! Since I am typically on-the-go I wear clothes that transition easy, a fun set is the perfect beach cover up over a bright bikini but, can also be made appropriate for the casual environment with a baseball cap, sandals and a fun bag!

Just a short drive down Pacific Coast Highway, you’ll come across Newport, my favorite destination for an “upscale-OC” experience. Newport is more expansive in comparison, having the marina, Via Lido, the Balboa Peninsula, and Balboa Island.

Where you can find quick and casual eats in HB, Newport houses reasturaunts such as Nobu and Zinque and provides residents and visitors with higher-end shopping. The beaches in Newport span down the Peninsula but, since it is not one straight across beach (like HB), boating is a replacement to sunbathing. After a day spent on the water there is NO better treat than a chocolate-covered frozen banana (with your choice of toppings!) from Dad’s.

Again, I love to be functional in the way I dress so, by pairing a one piece suit (that can double as a top) with pants let’s me go from the water to dinner. You can dress it up with a pair of heels and a chic bag and look like you spent hours getting ready… instead of a quick change off the boat!

Laguna Beach

Unfortunately, I have not spent much time in Laguna but, I have been there long enough to fall in love with the beautiful cliffy coves and the artsy shopping and residents. Laguna’s scenery is much different than directly north along the coast, every beach is surrounded by cliffs that give this OC town the feel that you have traveled to a tropical island.

From my personal experience I recommend spending as much of your time enjoying the scenery. There are beautiful public beaches, an abundance of hiking trails, and restaurants that serve food as great as their ocean views. With many local artists, the museums and art festivals are a must!

The laid-back, yet bustling Laguna scene calls for linen dresses and artful swimsuits. Keeping to a nude palette gives the outfit effortless chicness that will last you all day and make you to feel more like one of the locals than a visitor.
